Antigua ~ Summer 2006

I created this blog to let people know about our trip to Antigua this summer. I decided to keep updating during the year to let people know about other ministry opportunities that we have during the year. I pray that it will be an encouragement to others to serve the Lord wherever you are and be willing to follow Him wherever He leads you.

Ministry

Here are some of the ministries we have helped with in the past...

all of us kids helping repair radio equipment

Marcia created a database to catalogue the radio station's music

Mark usually spent the whole time fixing the station's books

the guys doing rotine weed wacking with machetes...actually this is a picture of them taking a break afterwards

Marcia's turn to lend a hand with the weed control...watch out for the stinging nettles and fire ants...Ouch!

Last time...

Here are a few pictures from the last time our family was there. We will be participating in a lot of the same ministeries, so this way you will be able to picture the places and people we refer to while in Antigua. I don't know if I am going to be able to post any new pictures once we are down there, so you might have to wait until we get back to see them.

Antigua'a Flag

Where in the world is Antigua?

Since some of you might not know a whole lot about Antigua, I decided to post some information about the country....

Antigua and Barbuda (one nation composed of several islands) is one of the more prosperous of the Caribbean nations. The islands attract hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, and the nation's economy is dependent on tourism.

Antigua and Barbuda were British colonies from 1632 until they achieved independence in 1981. The majority of the population is descended from African slaves brought to the islands to work on cotton and sugar cane plantations, and the islands' culture developed from a mixture of African, West Indian, and British influences.

Antigua and Barbuda lies at the southern end of the Leeward Islands chain, which is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Caribbean Sea to the west.
Antigua is low-lying with rolling hills made up of volcanic rock, coral, and limestone. Its highest point is Boggy Peak at 1,542 ft. The coastline is composed of coves and bays and is known for its 365 beaches.

English is the official language of Antigua and Barbuda. However, Leeward Caribbean Creole English, an English-based creole, is the language used in informal situations by the majority of the population. Most of the population would claim Christianiy as their religion, however, most of these are Anglican, Moravian, Methodist, or Seventh-Day Adventists. There are also Roman Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses and Rastafarians.

Getting Ready...

In only 12 days our family--Mark, Raynell, Marcia and Ryan Harrison--will be leaving for Antigua, West Indies. We will be spending two weeks helping missionaries Curt and Barb Waite with their various ministries. We are preparing now by collecting food, snorkling gear, etc... which will come in handy once we get there. We would appreciate it if you would partner with us by praying for us! I will do my best to keep you updated as the departure date approaches and while we are in country.
